It's official, the next Android operating system will be called Oreo. The search giant revealed the name at the hieght of solar eclipse in New York during an eclipse viewing party. The all-new Android 8.0 Oreo will be hitting Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X and Pixel C devices in the next few weeks. David Burke, the VP of engineering, Android, has said that the OS version for Pixel and Nexus smartphones has entered carrier testing. Beta users can flash the final version of the OS manually. Wonder what's new in Android Oreo? Here are the key new features that your smartphones will get with Android 8.0 Oreo update. Less

NEW DELHI: Google at its IO 2017 conference revealed most of the major features of the Android 8.0 Oreo. However, it did not reveal one nifty feature at that time - Rescue Party. The 'Rescue Party' feature has been detailed by Google on one of its Android Source pages.

It has been explained that the Rescue Party feature in Android 8.0 Oreo will automatically detect if the smartphone is facing some issues and is running on bootloop and will recover the device. "Android 8.0 includes a feature that sends out a "rescue party" when it notices core system components stuck in crash loops. Rescue Party then escalates through a series of actions to recover the device," says the page.

The search giant even says that "as a last resort, Rescue Party reboots the device into recovery mode and prompts the user to perform a factory reset."

While this is a nifty yet useful feature, unfortunately, most of the users would have to wait until next year to get Android O. Only select brands have announced their handsets that will be receiving Android O. Some of those brands are OnePlus, Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Asus and Nexus/Pixel.

For those unaware, Google unveiled the official name of the Android 8.0 Oreo at the time of the solar eclipse. Since past few months there were rumours suggesting that the company will name Android 'O' as Oreo, given the dessert's popularity across the globe. As the tradition goes, Google has been naming its Android versions after a dessert - Eclairs, Froyo, Gingerbread, HoneyComb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat.

Android 8.0 Oreo comes with loads of new features such as Native picture-in-picture mode, Notification Badges, Smart Text Selection, System optimisations, Improved battery life and Autofill with Google Chrome.

Android 8.0 Oreo will also include redesigned Emojis. The company in May confirmed that the company will be rolling out newly-designed stock emojis with Android O. The new emoji set has been in the works for a year-and-a-half and is claimed to be more user-friendly. Google bid adieu its blob-styled emoji a few months ago.
